We used raw finger jointed 3/4in pine. The process we used was to plot out where all of the shelving supports would need to go on the wall in pencil, install them with finish nails and glue, then put in vertical shelves and supports. On the vertical boards we used cutting dado grooves and half lap joints similar to how you put together cabinets to ensure it stays strong and is continuous.
